Meet Mantyke! (Pattern)

Another make-it-monday, another pokemon pattern! This week, thinking about summer and swimming, I’m bringing you Mantyke! Mantyke is a perfect example of my “pattern paradox” – I look at it, think “This will be easy”, then get started, and realize “huh, how do I actually do this”, haha. Fortunately I found a solution rather quickly, and while I would’ve liked to do him with just crochet, I found it much easier to just felt his underside instead. I hope someone out there will like this cute little guy and make their own lil manta baby ❤

Pattern

Materials
To make Mantyke you will need:
– A 2.5mm crochet hook
– Blue yarn
– A tapestry needle and scissors
– Stuffing
– Felting supplies and wool in light blue, black and pink
– A stitch marker to help you keep track of the start of the round; and I also recommend pins
– I recommend some pipe cleaner to help hold up the stem
Please note that you can make Mantyke using any size crochet hook and yarn weight for a smaller or bigger result. I like using DK as it’s most commonly available. If you make amigurumi, it is usually recommended to go down a bit from the recommended hook size for the yarn to allow for a no-hole look (we don’t want to see the stuffing show through in between stitches)! Using DK yarn and a 2.5mm crochet hook, Mantyke should be about 10cm tall (including antennae), 20cm wide (from fin tip to fin tip), and 10cm long (head to tail).

Stitches & Abbreviations
The pattern is written using US crochet terms in continuous spirals. You will need to know the following kinds of stitches to make him:
– Magic Ring (MR)
– Chaining
– Single crochet (sc)
– Decrease (dec); preferably using the invisible decrease method
– Increase (inc)
And now, let’s get started!

Round 2-7 (6 rounds): Sc around
Round 8: Sc 4, dec (5), stuff
Round 9-11 (3 rounds): Sc around (5), finish stuffing and fasten off

Assembly
Assembly is simple, but time-consuming. First, fold the fins in half and sew them to the body. Sew the edges of the first row together to close the fin, don’t forget to stuff! Then sew the antennae to the head, approx. between rounds 5-7, 3-4 stitches apart. Now comes the time-consuming part: Take your light blue felting wool and felt on its underside. It should cover the entirety of the underside of the fins and the majority of the underside of the body; use some reference pictures to get it right. Once you’re done with this, you could either embroider on a little face with thread, or just felt it on as well. Done!

And that’s it! Enjoy your new little friend! You may post pictures of your Mantyke online as well as sell amigurumi made from this pattern, but I ask that you credit me as the creator of this pattern. Please do not redistribute the pattern.
