Meet Combee! (Pattern)

Hello world! You may have noticed I am trying to share some summery vibes here, with my last 2 pokemon patterns being Sunkern and Sunflora! And now, after I already started this guy in… February, I think… I am bringing you Combee! No flowers without bees, right? Truly Combee just sat around here forever. I wasn’t entirely happy with the shape but couldn’t think of a better way, and so, in my dissatisfaction, I massively procrastinated on this guy. As I am typing this, it is the end of May (I am soooo ahead of my amigurumi schedule lol!), and I finally finished Combee a few days ago. It is far from perfect and definitely not one of my best patterns, but maybe somebody out there will try to tackle this guy anyways! And maybe one day I will try again and make an “improved” version, but for now, please enjoy this guy!

Pattern

Materials
To make Combee you will need:
– A 2.5mm Crochet hook
– Yellow, orange, white and black yarn
– A tapestry needle and scissors
– Stuffing
– A stitch marker to help you keep track of the start of the round
– Wire for the wings and antennae
– Safety eyes
– Optional, but highly recommended: cardboard to support and stabilize the body
Please note that you can make Combee using any size crochet hook and yarn weight for a smaller or bigger result. I like using DK as it’s most commonly available. If you make amigurumi, it is usually recommended to go down a bit from the recommended hook size for the yarn to allow for a no-hole look (we don’t want to see the stuffing show through in between stitches)! Using DK yarn and a 2.5mm crochet hook, Combee should be about 10cm tall.

Stitches & Abbreviations
The pattern is written using US crochet terms in continuous spirals. You will need to know the following kinds of stitches to make him:
– Magic Ring (MR)
– Chaning (Ch)
– Single crochet (sc)
– Half double crochet (hdc)
– Double crochet (dc)
– Decrease (dec); preferably using the invisible decrease method
– Increase (inc)
– Working in back loops only (BLO)
And now, let’s get started!

Faces (in yellow, make 3)
Round 1: In a MR, sc 6
Round 2: Inc around (12)
Round 3: (Sc, inc) around (18)
Round 4: (Sc 2, inc) around (24)
Round 5-8 (4 rounds): Sc around (24), fasten off

Base (in orange, make 6)
Round 1: In a MR, sc 6
Round 2: Inc around (12)
Round 3: (Sc, inc) around (18)
Round 4: (Sc 2, inc) around (24)
Round 5: (Sc 3, inc) around (30), fasten off
Sew three of these together on the insides, minding the hexagon shape and aligning the corners (the increases) appropriately. We will now continue working on the bases for the
Body
Round 6: Insert your hook into any stitch of the base. In BLO, sc around, decreasing over the increases you’ve made earlier. You should have a total of 52 stitches, but the exact amount does not matter! Having 1-2 stitches more or less it totally fine.
Round 7-15 (9 rounds): Sc around (52), fasten off
Now sew the other 3 base pieces together. I highly recommend using some cardboard and attaching this to the inside of the body to reinforce the straight and angular shape. Once you’ve done that, insert stuffing and then sew the back base on.

Back pieces (in yellow, make 2)
Round 1: In a MR, sc 6
Round 2: Inc around (12)
Round 3: (Sc, inc) around (18)
Round 4: (Sc 2, inc) around (24)
Round 5: Sc around (24), fasten off

Shoulders (in orange make 2)
Round 1: In a MR, sc 6
Round 2: Inc around (12)
Round 3: Sc around (12), fasten off

Wings (in white: make 2)
Ch 13, sc 2, hdc 5, sc 4, sc 3 in the last stitch, then on the other side of the chain hdc, dc 2, tc 4, dc, hdc 2, sc, fasten off

Butt
Round 1: In yellow, in a MR, sc 6
Round 2: (Sc, inc) around (9)
Round 3: (Sc 2, inc) around (12)
Round 4: (Sc 3, inc) around (15), change to black
Round 5: (Sc 4, inc) around (18)
Round 6: (Sc 5, inc) around (21), fasten off

Antennae (in black; make 2)
Ch 8, sc 6, hdc 4 in last chain, fasten off.

Assembly
Grab yourself some honey flavored candy or something because you probably need some sugar and happiness at this point. BUT! You already did a bunch of assembling when you made the body. First of all you should now start on finishing the front. Do this by inserting safety eyes into the face pieces and then sewing them to the center of each hexagon. Then embroider some happy little mouths. On the back, sew on the back pieces and the butt. Then sew on the shoulder pieces to the sides and then sew on the wings. Sew the antennae to the front. Lastly, insert some wire into the antennae and the wings to stabilize them. Done!

And that’s it! Enjoy your new little friend! You may post pictures of your Combee online as well as sell amigurumi made from this pattern, but I ask that you credit me as the creator of this pattern. Please do not redistribute the pattern.
