Meet the Santa bunny! (December bun; Pattern)

HELLO EVERYONE! Welcome to the last, the final, the ultimate 12 months of bun pattern, and what else could it be other than Santa bun?! (Yes, I know, a million other things, like a snowman bunny, a reindeer bunny… all on my list for the future :D) 2 years ago I made an amigurumi advent calendar for my husband which also contained a bunny with a santa hat, so I decided to make a bigger, non-shoebox-diorama-sized version for the last bunny pattern of this year! I hope you’ve enjoyed this project as much as I have, so for one last bunniful time this year, let’s hop right into the pattern!

Pattern

Materials
To make the Santa bunny you will need:
– A 2.5mm and a 3.5mm crochet hook (the latter is only required for cuddly yarn, so if you aren’t using that, only a 2.5mm is enough)
– Yarn in your colors of choice. I used cream for the bunny, a cuddly white and regular red for the hat, red, gold and brown for the sleigh, some… beige(?) for the sack, and purple and gold for the gift
– A tapestry needle and scissors
– Stuffing
– Safety eyes
– Pipecleaners for the sleigh blades
– A stitch marker to help you keep track of the start of the round
Please note that you can make the Santa bunny using any size crochet hook and yarn weight for a smaller or bigger result. I like using DK as it’s most commonly available. If you make amigurumi, it is usually recommended to go down a bit from the recommended hook size for the yarn to allow for a no-hole look (we don’t want to see the stuffing show through in between stitches)! Using DK yarn and a 2.5mm crochet hook, Santa bun should be about 20cm high.

Stitches & Abbreviations
The pattern is written using US crochet terms in continuous spirals. You will need to know the following kinds of stitches to make him:
– Magic Ring (MR)
– Chaning (ch)
– Single crochet (sc)
– Decrease (dec); preferably using the invisible decrease method
– Increase (inc)
– Working into front loops (FLO) and back loops (BLO) only
– Slip stitch (sl)
And now, let’s get started!

Hat
NOTE 1: It can be very hard to keep up with your stitch count if you’re using cuddly yarn as it’s basically impossible to see your actual stitches. I therefore recommend you keep counting as you go along, and if you notice you’re a few stitches short shortly before the end of the round, just work some increases. Don’t worry too much about the exact stitch count as you won’t be able to see the stitches anyways. You can easily adjust the final stitch count by increasing or decreasing on the first red round.
NOTE 2: I worked the ear holes into round 10, but in hindsight, I should’ve worked them 2-3 rounds earlier. This is completely up to you. If you decide to work them sooner, just make sure to work the same amount of rounds total.
Round 1: Using your 3.5mm hook and cuddly white yarn, ch 38, sc into the first chain you’ve made (be careful not to twist your chain) and sc around (38)

Sleigh blades (in brown; make 2)
NOTE: You could work this in the round, but I hate making long, slim tubes in the round and also find it very hard to insert pipecleaners into them, so I crochet them flat and sew them together at the end.
Row 1: Ch 6, sc 5
Row 2-44 (43 rows): Sc across (5), fasten off

Present
The present can be made any size you’d like. If you’re making a different size, pay attention to the BLO and FLO parts as whether you will need to work one or the other depending on how many rows you’ve worked since the last BLO/FLO.
Row 1: Ch 7, sc 6
Row 2-7 (6 rows): Sc across (6)
Row 8: In FLO, sc across (6)
Row 9-12 (4 rows): Sc across (6)
Row 13: In BLO, sc across (6)
Row 14-19 (6 rows): Sc across (6)
Row 20: In FLO, sc across (6)
Row 21-24 (4 rows): Sc across (6), fasten off
For the sides, you will need to work a rectangle that’s one stitch and one row smaller than your present. For example, my present is 7 rows (rows 1-7) wide and 5 rows (row 8-12) high, so I made 2 rectangles that are 6 stitches and 4 rows long. For the ribbon, chain 2 chains that are long enough to wrap around your present both ways, and for the ribbon on top, I simply crocheted 6 stitches for 4 rows.

Assembly
First, we assemble the bunny. Take the body and sew it to the head. Then, fold the ears in half and sew them on as well. Sew on the feet, arms, and tail. Sew the pompom to the hat, then put the hat onto the bunny’s head. I added some stuffing, but this is optional. For the sleigh, I chose golden yarn and joined the bottom and the sides together by working single crochets into both pieces around. The part where we worked in front loops should align with the “hard” edge of the side piece. Continue doing this until your sleigh is assembled on both sides. For the blades, I placed pipecleaners inside, sewed them closed, then sewed them to the bottom of the sleigh. For the sack, I simply stuffed it and tied it together using some red yarn. Lastly, for the present, sew the sides to the main part of the present to close it, then wrap your ribbons around and sew them into place, and finally, take your ribbon square, wrap your yarn around the middle to shape it into a bow, and sew it to the top. Sew the present to the bunny, if you’d like. Done! Merry Christmas!

And that’s it! Enjoy your new little friend! You may post pictures of your Santa bunny online as well as sell amigurumi made from this pattern, but I ask that you credit me as the creator of this pattern. Please do not redistribute the pattern.
